Our History

We are an independent family run business based in Hull, East Yorkshire and Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, proudly serving our customers for over 100 years. To give you a background into Segal's here is a little history! See the timeline of our history below.

1919

The business began in Hull's South Street over 100 years ago, just after the first world war - only a stone's throw from where we are today! The business was started by Jack Segal, a time served watchmaker. In addition to repairing watches, he saw an opportunity to buy scrap gold and silver. After extracting some items of jewellery, he repaired them and offered them for sale, sparking the beginning of a successful business.

1921

In 1921 the shop moved to a larger premises in Porter Street, then a thriving part of Hull. Alongside clock and watch repairs, Jack Segal started to sell antiques and silverware.

1947

In 1947, Maurice returned from the war and joined the family business. He had a particular interest in Antique and secondhand jewellery and Maurice developed this side of the business with great success. Maurice found that he couldn't buy enough secondhand and antique jewellery to stock his shop and over 40 years ago started buying new jewellery as well. His passion for buying and selling antique and secondhand jewellery was the beginning of the Segal's we are today.

1963

In 1963 Maurice began working alone buying and selling secondhand jewellery in a small single unit - 14 Paragon Arcade.

1994

The business then expanded further in 1994 thanks to Maurice’s wife Shirley. Two additional shops arrived in the Arcade forming the then Segal’s Gold Shop in 10 Paragon Arcade, Segal’s 2 Silver Shop and the Gift Shop.

1995

In 1995 Shirley's son Matthew joined forces with Maurice. His love for luxury watches and his expert eye for diamonds took the business to a new dimension.

1997

In 1997, Shirley's daughter Jo joined and helped expand the business, starting with opening a sparkling new shop in Freshney Place Shopping Centre, Grimsby. This store stocks a range of Segal’s stock – including gold, silver, and gifts.

Then, Jo and Jane united to open two shops on the Top Deck of Princes Quay.

2003

Having proved sucsessful in our Grimsby store, we decided to stay in Freshney Place and expand to a much larger store in Flottergate.

2011

Maurice sadly passed away in 2011, he really was one of life's true gentlemen. To this day, Shirley Segal is still very active in overseeing the business.

2019

For years our customers have said to us 'You need a bigger shop!'

In 2019 the business moved to larger premises, just moving 50 yards from the old shop in Paragon Arcade which has been turned into a dedicated Silver Shop. The shiny new shop on the corner of Chariot Street and Carr Lane very much embraces the feel of the Segal's that everyone knows and loves, just with a little more sparkle.

Segal's Jewellers is now run by sister and brother, Jo and Mat. Mat and his wife Jane, plus Jo and her husband Martin, all work together to make the business what it is today! Their children are now joining the industry, making this a fourth generation family business they are all very proud of.

2023

Exciting redevelopment plans in 2023 allowed for us to relocate our Grimsby store to an even bigger site in Friargate. Our beautiful new location is significantly larger and reflects the design and offerings of our flagship store in Hull. Ran by manager Laura (the lady with the bow as she is fondly known as), our dazzling new shop still contains all the same smiley faces you know and love - just surrounded by a bit more sparkle!

2023

Segal’s has been delighting Hull and Grimsby customers with Antique, new and pre-owned jewellery for over 100 years. From luxurious diamond jewellery, engagement & wedding rings to prestigious timepieces and jewellery for everyday wear. You are sure to find something special in store or browse our website and order online.

We buy in and part-exchange your unwanted items, offering simple repairs to bespoke jewellery designed and handcrafted just for you.  We provide expert advice in a friendly environment, priding ourselves on good old fashioned values.

However, it's not all about the family - it's our extended family, the wonderful team that supports us. Many have been with us for decades, and the knowledge and experience they provide, we believe is invaluable to our customers.

So thank you for being part of our history and our future.
